Klapa ; Sound of Female Klapa

Sat 18 April
When hiring a car in Bali it’s always a good idea to pick a rental business close to a petrol station as there’s rarely enough juice in the car to get out of the driveway let alone to a bowser. My lesson was learnt on the way to Klapa, rolling a dead engine onto the side of sunset road and making a heat of the day hike to the nearest petrol station to fill up some empty aqua bottles. By the time I got up to the ‘new Kuta’ it had been a hot mission, but one look at the ocean view as sunset began to put on a show and the energy returned to my veins. Looking out over the coast line it’s easy to see why ‘Dreamland’ is always such a popular destination, a perfect area to unwind into nature and escape the downtown madness. I soon found my friends and we settled into the grooves dished out by DJ Tammy from Jakarta who was first to hit the decks as part of the ‘Sound of Female’ party. The tracks continued to roll along strong with DJ’s Heidi and Niina until the cliff top outdoor area became a neat dance floor for the taking. Open air entertainment is the perfect end to a hot day and the females on this occasion knew how to lay down the right soundtrack…

VOLCOM STONE’S HELIFISH SURF SERIES

CIMAJA, SUNSET BEACH, WEST JAVA

Saturday, 11 October 2008
The morning of Volcom’s Helifish Surf Series Cimaja started off cloudy with a couple minutes of rain, but that doesn’t seem to bother any of the competing surfers even one bit. Soon later the clouds cleared to reveal the blasting sun, and the Under 14s was up first.

With 1-2 feet waves and offshore winds, Ryan Hidayat and Andre Julian fought to catch the best waves. Ryan was killing it with snap maneuvers but the Andre was better, he then caught a set and riding backside maneuver all the way to the shore. He led the scoreboards and walk away with a Volcom goodie bag, prize money and a surfboard complete with leg rope, fins, grip and wax!

In the Under 17s division, local boys Cakrayudha and Monot had more experience where they have competed and learned the waves of Bali – and immediately went ahead in points than the rest of the pack. The competition was fierce, but it was Cakra who got the big set with snap and cutback maneuvers and beating Monot just by one point! So close!

Ujang Jitli and Cakrayudha played it safe in the Pro Am division, careful because of the tight point difference between the two. Ujang Jitli was lucky to catch the best wave of the day, and his backside floater put him in the first place.

Contestants enjoyed free lunch, and as usual, the day was closed with rains of Volcom giveaways.

Pupuan Batukaru

Batukaru lies in Bali’s heartlands - an incredibly fertile and idyllic environment spread across the shallow slopes of a mountain. Batukaru’s higher reaches are jungle clad, but lower down what appears to be jungle is in fact a vast garden where everything from vanilla, coffee, cocoa, cloves, tropical fruit and of course rice is grown. What’s more, it’s a mere hour and a half’s drive from the southern resort areas of Seminyak and Kuta.

• Batu Karu is Bali’s second highest mountain at 7468 feet. It is also home to Bali’s second largest rainforest.

• Pura Luhur Batukaru, one of the biggest of Bali’s six royal temples, is found here.

• Recently declared a World Heritage Site, Jatiluwih Rice Terrace offers some of the most spectacular rice field views in the world.

• It’s possible to climb Gunung Batukaru. It takes four to six hours to reach the summit and three to five hours to return; guides charge Rp700,000 per small group for a day hike or Rp1,000,000 if camping overnight: trekkers must bring all their own food, water and sleeping bags. Many accommodations on Batukaru also offer climbing packages.

• Eco lodges and boutique hotels can be found on Batu Karu, all of them with expansive views.

Getting there:
By car or motorcycle via Tabanan
